The column "A word from OLAW and USDA" in November's Lab Animal discusses "categorizing insufficient pain alleviation." Joint International Symposium on Animal Welfare presented by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) will be held in East Lansign, MI on November 9-11, 2009. The symposium, “Swimming With the Tide – Animal Welfare in Veterinary Medical Education and Research”, is for veterinarians, educators, researchers, students, and others interested in animal welfare. The program will focus on animal welfare as an evolving discipline and educating veterinarians to be effective decision makers and advocates. APHIS has now started posting inspection reports for research facilities on their website. Although inspection reports have been available through the Freedom of Information Act for many years, this allows anyone with an internet connection to view inspection reports instantly. Institutions may want to review the procedure for appealing USDA citations, which is available in Animal Care's Research Facility Inspection Guide, section 7.8. ____________________________________________ SCAW Programs and Upcoming Events SCAW Winter Conference: Creating and Running an Engaged and Proactive IACUC.
