NEW from NIH/OLAW:
- Information and criteria on obtaining an Animal Welfare Assurance from OLAW can be found on a new page of their website.
- Position statements, FAQs and resources regarding OLAW's adoption of the 8th edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals can be found on their website. The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare expects PHS-Assured institutions to conduct at least one semi-annual inspection and program evaluation using the 8th edition of the Guide by December 31, 2012. Visit OLAW's website to view their implementation plan.
- Preparing the Vertebrate Animal Section of an NIH grant- a Factsheet from OLAW is available from their website (PDF).
- A committee from the Institute of Medicine has concluded that "most current use of chimpanzees for biomedical research is unneccesary." The NIH will develop a complete plan to implement the committee's recommendations, including what types of studies NIH will fund in the future. Until the plan is implemented, no new funding will be awarded for research projects using chimpanzees. Read NIH Director Collins' statement here.

- Implementation of new guidelines by AAALAC, International. AAALAC has issued new guidelines, FAQs, and position statements regarding its implementation of the three standard guidelines (including the 8th edition of the Guide). Please see their website for details.
APHIS posts annual reports, inspection reports, and recent AWA enforcement violations for research facilities on their website. Although inspection reports have been available through the Freedom of Information Act for many years, this allows anyone with an internet connection to view inspection reports instantly. Institutions may want to review the procedure for appealing USDA citations, which is available in Animal Care's Research Facility Inspection Guide, section 7.8.
